Many people in Haiti are faced with a difficult choice. Having left everything behind in last month’s devastating earthquake, thousands are living with only the clothes on their backs.

In the 1980’s I was privileged visit Haiti twice. I found the Haitian people to be clean, modest, and hard working. One month after the devastating earthquake, in a hot Caribbean climate, people are faced with the choice of wearing the clothes on their backs, even though unclean and smelly, or going naked while they wash their clothes.

As President Obama threatens to use a Parliamentary procedure known a “reconciliation” to end debate on healthcare reform and force an up or down vote, it’s good to note that Michigan’s senior senator opposes such a naked power grab.

In 2005, Michigan U.S. Sen. Carl Levin called the use “reconciliation” to end debate — as the president and some Democrats have suggested be done with regard to the healthcare — a “nuclear option” that would “destroy” the institution of the Senate.

The maple leaf is gold as the Canadian Olympic hockey team beat the Americans in sudden-death overtime.

Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburg Penguins captain who helped thwart the Red Wings' Stanley Cup hopes last season, scored the winning goal for his native Canada against the Americans. The winning coach for Team Canada was the Red Wings' own Mike Babcock.

The score was 3-2.

The Livingston County United Way is hosting a couple of contests for area teens in connection with the 9th Annual Day of Caring scheduled for Aug. 18. Last year’s Day of Caring featured volunteers from 120 area companies at 68 different work sites. 20 seniors or shut-ins received help at their homes, and food drives were held at eight area grocery stores. Talented local teens can get involved by designing a logo or video for promoting this event.

Select spaces remain for the 47th annual Livingston County Home Show, set for March 26-28 at the Howell High School Field House, 1200 W. Grand River. The show is hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce.

“If it bleeds, it leads.” That is the mantra of the national and local news media. They love a good fight! What they do not particularly like, and therefore seldom cover, is a cooperative spirit that does great good for the community. So the headlines scream chaos, while a lot of good is being done by many people in Livingston County and other Michigan counties every day.

As John Edwards fades into a footnote in the long history of those who aspired to lead the nation, citizens good and true shake their heads and wonder what has become of American virtue.
How dare a man like that put himself forward not only as the one to lead the nation but the whole free world?
