When I first decided to accept Maria Stuart's offer to blog at LivingstonTalk.com, I had a long LivingstonTalk with myself about where the line was between writing about my work as a concert promoter, and what I might consider abusing my journalistic powers and using my blogger status to simply be a sounding board for my company.  Today, I walk that line very closely.  I'm going to tell you about something close to my heart, and if I cross the line just a little, it's in the spirit of the subject matter.  Forgive me.

My church is very nice. They have the best church coffee in the county, sometimes they play bluegrass music in the preschool area, and there is a swimming pool on the premises. But they don’t have a zoo, although when I am in charge of the four- year-olds it usually looks and feels like a zoo in that particular classroom.

This winter has been especially long, hasn’t it? On Thursday, I was driving down the road, in the same winter trance I’ve been in for months, and I flipped to the Detroit sports station, to listen to the same sports talk I listen to every day, and I heard a crowd cheering, and the crack of a bat. Baseball is back!

It was all of a sudden that I also noticed that the sun was shining. Brightly. And it was warm. I even cracked the window for a few minutes.

To me, there is something magical about the Olympics. Perhaps it has to do with the opening ceremonies when thousands of elite athletes gather to speak in one voice. It’s monumental; not just for the athletes, but for people like me who are inspired by what they accomplish.

The start of a new year is as good a time as any for folks to take stock of their lives in terms of finances, business, personal, family and other aspects. People set new goals, review their old goals. People make changes, readjust and establish resolutions with newfound vigor.

I am no different than most folks. Once again I vowed to be more organized, watch what I eat, stick to my exercise program and, this year, I have added a review of our investments; not so much the investments themselves but more so the philosophy.

My oldest son describes it like a very bad dream.

“We were in church. The bulletin said it was time for some kind of musical thing to happen. My mom stood up with a bunch of other people and walked toward the front of the sanctuary. With growing horror, I realized everyone else was reaching for an instrument and my mom” (here he pauses for effect) “was reaching for a microphone.”

His exact words: “With growing horror.”

I have probably bought a dozen blueberry bushes in the last couple of years. All except one of them died within a year. They all get kind of yellow-green in color and lose leaves and die. One is left and it doesn’t look good either. I planted them where they get morning sun my lawn sprinklers water them. So what am I supposed to do to get them to live and make berries?

Oh, let me count the ways. Growing blueberries is a “challenge.” It can be done but it isn’t going to happen without a whole lot of knowledge-driven work.

For some, the dreary days of winter are equivalent to a five-month prison sentence. Everyone is sick. The heaps of snow interrupt our daily schedules and turn quickly to slush. To students, winter means midterms and hectic test schedules that seem never-ending. Right now, summer seems about a thousand years away. Because of these discouraging aspects of our cold, Michigan winter, it is especially important to keep a positive attitude and find some joy.

Recently Neil Woodward, one of our board members was interviewed by Michigan Radio and asked, "What three things can we do to help Michigan?"  I liked what Neil had to say and you can listen by clicking here

What do you think?  What can each of us do to make it through this "Great Depression", which is how it feels to many of us.

I have my three:

There is a mystery in Brighton. Someone is handing out “stupid” pills. How do I know this? The streets of Brighton are turning into a big bumper car game. The people of Brighton are well-educated, good citizens. In their right minds the bumper car game would be unthinkable. So, the mystery is: “Who is passing out stupid pills in Brighton?”
