As we prepare for Livingston County’s version of “Snowmageddon,” think of a snow day at home as an opportunity to do something nice for yourself.

Baking from scratch is a wonderful snow day activity. As well as warming your home, the smell of freshly baking bread is one that just can’t be duplicated, and since you control the ingredients, you can be assured that the result is healthier than anything you’ll find at the supermarket.

Leaf, Barley and Vine has much to offer for many palates. There is a cigar room with humidor and the barrier between the smoking room and the rest of the space is so well designed that you won’t know there are cigars being smoked on the premises.

Okay – back off already – of course I want to save the whales too! But please, don’t toss the ham bone.

Now – daily exercise. Raise your hand if you have leftover ham or a finely whittled spiral ham still in the fridge? Me too! Well – the other day I did. Today I have split pea soup. I wanted to get this on asap – and I know that some people have spiral hams on New Year’s too so keep this in mind.

Old recipes often deliver somewhat less than we think they promise. It’s not always clear why.

Sometimes I think modern appetites demand more flavor than our forebears expected. I know my spice rack is at least twice as big as my mother’s was.

Sometimes the recipe calls for ingredients that were practical and available at the time, but a global economy and modern canning and freezing techniques make fresher food available to us.

I'm going to write this down for you real quick, because you don't have a lot of time.  You're shopping on Christmas Eve.  Silly, silly person.  Why do you do this to yourself every year?  I've got a solution for you that might save your Christmas!

I had you at Sanders, didn’t I?

For those of us who grew up in Detroit or the ’burbs, was there anything better than a Sanders hot fudge cream puff? So good. My grandma always made me eat my tuna salad sandwich first – which wasn’t too hard to do since the tuna was so wonderful. Do you remember the paper cones for water? So cool, even before retro was retro!

I’ve been asked to bring a dish to pass. An appetizer. As the holidays approach I’d guess a majority of you have asked or been asked for a dish to pass. So what’s the big deal?

Just this. It’s been nearly five years since my business closed. It’s been nearly 5 years since the monthly pot-lucks guaranteed a) a great lunch b) some interesting lunch conversations and c) a chance to bring a dish that would be popular, tasty and health conscious.

And now I’ve been asked to bring a dish to pass. An appetizer. For a group of people I barely know.

Is a bagel just a donut with the sin removed? Is a bagel just an unsweetened donut with rigor mortis?

No, and No! A bagel is the basis for a really awesome appetizer!

The big turkey day is around the corner and the vineophile is rooting about the cellar for the perfect poultry pairing. With all the trimmings that go with the typical holiday feast, wine pairings can be pretty varied and it’s de rigueur to think multiple wines for multiple courses.
