“Crime Noir: Then and Now,” a presentation featuring award-winning mystery writer Loren D. Estleman, and David Geherin, a professor of English language and literature at Eastern Michigan University, kicks off this year’s The Big Read of Dashiell Hammett's “The Maltese Falcon.”

Limited quantities of free books will be available. Live music by the Premier Big Band starts the event at 1 p.m., with the presentation set to begin at 2 p.m. Art noir, created by local students and community artists, will also be on display.

This boisterous steampunk novel is set in an alternative 1880’s America and takes place in a shattered Seattle, Washington. When gold was found in the Klondike, the Russians wanted to build a machine that would extract this easily. Inventor Leviticus Blue created the Boneshaker, a massive mining machine. But on its trial run, it went out of control and cut a large swath of destruction through downtown Seattle. Blue drove the Boneshaker home to his basement lab and was never seen again. Blue’s young wife, Briar Wilkes, gave birth to their son, Zeke, that night.

M.M. Buckner offers us this shades of the X Files novel that deals with the possible ramifications of our throwaway society. As we acquire new technology, we throw away our old cell phones, MP3 players, and computers. It stands to reason that a lot of our electronic garbage, along with pharmaceuticals and even genetically modified seeds will eventually end up in our water supply. And from such a potent chemical stew; what might emerge? Such is the premise of this book.

Book clubs are great for people who want to read outside their comfort zone. During the past several years of running a book club, I have found that the book I least liked reading had the best discussions.

If you have been in Aria Booksellers in the past couple months, chances are you have met Moe, the newest addition to my family, as well as being my very first dog.

I truly lucked out when I agreed to take Moe. His original family was unable to keep him. Moe has a mellow disposition, and is the perfect bookstore mascot. His personality has won the hearts of my customers, the FedEx man, postman and especially the UPS man!

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.  Good advice for the most part. But what if giving one's opinion may save someone else both money and time?  Then it is okay, in my way of thinking.

I believe I've just answered my own question and justified why I am going to let you know not to waste your money or time on Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.
